How Much Fragrance Oil Per Pound of Soap?

“How much fragrance oil per pound of soap?” has a different answer depending on which soap you’re making — and on one detail most beginners get wrong: the percentage is based on your oils, not your finished bar. The Mistake That Breaks the Math

So for a recipe with 32 oz of oils, a 5% fragrance load is 32 × 0.05 = 1.6 oz of fragrance oil — regardless of how much water or lye the recipe uses.

The Math (Per Pound)

One pound = 16 oz. Multiply your oil weight by the fragrance percentage:

  • 4%: 16 oz × 0.04 = 0.64 oz fragrance oil
  • 5%: 16 oz × 0.05 = 0.8 oz fragrance oil

Rates by Soap Type

Cold process — 3–5% of oil weight. The harshest environment a fragrance oil meets: high pH, active lye, and heat from saponification. Some scent is always lost, which is why CP runs at the top of the range. Start at 5% for anything you want to still smell after a 4–6 week cure.

Hot process — 3–5% of oil weight. Same range, different timing. Because you add fragrance after the cook, less burns off, so some makers drop to 3–4% and still get a strong bar.

Melt and pour — 1–3% of base weight. Far lower, and the limit is physical: MP bases are already fully saponified with added glycerin and surfactants, and they can’t bind much oil. Overload and you get weeping (oil beading on the bar), a soft sticky surface, or a bar that won’t set. Start at 2%.

Liquid soap — 1–3% of the diluted weight. Fragrance goes in after dilution, once the soap paste is diluted and cooled. Higher rates can cloud the soap or drop out of solution; some oils need a solubilizer (like polysorbate 80) to stay clear.

Rebatch — 3–5%, added when the shreds are melted and cooled slightly. Rebatch is already saponified, so scent survives well.

When to Add Fragrance Oil

Timing matters as much as quantity — add it at the wrong moment and the rate becomes irrelevant.

Cold process — at light to medium trace. Once the batter has emulsified and thickened slightly, stir the fragrance in thoroughly but quickly. Too early (thin trace) and it can cause separation; too late and you can’t distribute it before the batter sets. With an oil known to accelerate, add at the lightest possible trace and hand-stir rather than using a stick blender.

Hot process — after the cook, off the heat. Let the cooked soap cool a few minutes first. Why More Isn’t Better

Unlike candles, where overloading mostly ruins performance, over-fragrancing soap has a safety dimension. Soap is a skin-contact product, and the IFRA certificate for your oil sets a maximum for IFRA Category 9 (rinse-off products, which is where bar soap, liquid soap, and shampoo sit).

Overloading also causes practical failures:

  • Acceleration and seizing — too much oil, added too fast, can set a CP batch solid in the pot.
  • Weeping in melt and pour — the base sheds oil it can’t hold.
  • A soft, greasy bar that never fully hardens.
  • Separation in liquid soap, or persistent cloudiness.

The IFRA Ceiling Comes First

Your recipe percentage can never exceed the oil’s IFRA maximum for the category you’re making. Most soap-rated oils allow somewhere around 2–5% in Category 9, so the IFRA limit and the practical range often nearly coincide — but not always. Vanillin and Discoloration

This isn’t a dosing problem, but it scales with dose. Fragrance oils containing vanillin oxidize and turn soap tan, then brown, over several weeks. A 5% vanilla oil browns harder and faster than the same oil at 3%.

It’s cosmetic, not a defect — but plan around it. Either lean into it with a brown or cream design, or pick a vanilla-free scent when you need a white bar.
